In order to create the relationship between two family members who already exist in the tree, you will want to use the Attach/Detach feature.
The Attach/Detach feature is used anytime you want to build a relationshipbetween two persons who are ALREADY in the family tree. For example, if cousins got married, it wouldn't be suitable to create a whole new genealogy card for each one because that means they would be listed in the tree twice.
What you want to do is to create a new type of relationship for them. This is where the Attach/Detach feature is helpful. It lets you draw a connecting line between two people (or erase one in the case of Detach). For each TYPE of relationship thereis a way to Attach or Detach. For husbAND wife this feature is locatedin the "Spouses" menu. For children it is located in the "Children" menu.
There are several different ways to get to these menus:
A) On the top menu bar under Person
B) By clicking on the EDIT button onan individual's genealogy card
C) By clicking on the EDIT button in the"Family" section.
My recommendation when using the Attach/Detach feature isto do it through the MANAGE function (e.g. Manage Spouses or ManageChildren). You can always do an Attach/Detach without using this screen, butin the MANAGE screen you can see and adjust ALL details at once which ishelpful.
What if I want to work on my family tree on a different computer?
The correct way to move a project from one computer to another (if both are
running FTB) is to export the project as a package, and then import that package. A
package maintains your data exactly, byte for byte, and can also include all
your photos.
To manage packages, go to File > Manage Projects in FTB. Click
any project listed and select export package. On the other computer, go to
File > Manage Projects and click Import package.
You dont need to do it via Gedcom export/import. The Gedcom format does not
support all the features that FTB supports in its internal format (which we
call .ZED - zipped Gedcom), so some unique FTB features might be lost. For
example, projects in FTB can be in multiple languages but when you export a
Gedcom file you can only use one language.
You should use a Gedcom export only if you are taking the data to another
application or Website.
Our latest version of FTB (536) will include Backup and Restore options in the file menu to help you with this.
Seems like you are both knowledgable and active on this software - I tried to activate FTB after a long while I did not use it. I downloaded teh software again - but was never able to register it. Tried to get new password, and enter it under "Existing User" and kept been rejected with "wrong password". Any tip?
I still don't understand. I started FTB on my computer and I've published it and everything, but I just got a laptop and I would like to work on my FTB with my laptop. I've downloaded FTB on my laptop, but I'm not sure how to transfer my tree from my computer to my laptop. I've tried putting it on a disc so that I could save it on my laptop but it didn't work. You said to export the package on the computer and import the package on the laptop, but I think it already needs to be on the computer/laptop to do that. It'll ask me where I want to export it to, and the only places I can select are the files that are on my computer. Do I need to connect my computers together with a USB cord or something? If you could please tell me the steps to transfer my FTB on my computer to my laptop I would really apreciate it, thank you.
